Let’s Talk Yoga Teacher Training

RISE 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training starts August 15th!

I’m excited to announce RISE yoga teacher training will begin August 15th, 2019 in El Dorado Hills. This will take place over seven weekends, and will include a retreat. Yes, this is Yoga Alliance Certified.
Training schedule and curriculum

Yoga teacher training is the most unique bubble for learning that I have ever encountered. First things first, everyone will arrive with a different goal or intention and that is not only normal, but it is awesome! Some will show up on day one knowing they want to teach yoga. Some will come to deepen their knowledge of their personal practice. Some will sign up because their best friend is doing it, and some will say yes out of curiosity. This blend of reasons makes the training group vibrant, and reaffirms the foundational lesson that we can show up and support each other in this journey, and not need to be exactly the same. How cool is that?

My vinyasa training comes from Zuda Yoga, a Sacramento based studio with senior teachers who studied closely with Jonny Kest and Baron Baptiste. My most recent advanced studies have been with Patrick Beach and Carling Harps. Based out of Seattle, Washington, their signature Awakening Yoga focuses on improving movement patterns, creating stability and nurturing balance. I have also co-led yoga teacher trainings at Radiant Yoga in El Dorado Hills and created writing experiences for yogis. This 200-hour yoga teacher training is the culmination of my studies and experience of teaching public classes, private lessons, workshops and yoga trainings. My goal is for students to leave training feeling confident and ready to take on being a new yoga teacher, and set up their personal practice for strength and longevity.

Trying to decide what training to take? I recently came across an article in Yoga Journal that helps students evaluate yoga teacher trainings. I love a good list and this article gives two main things to look for in a training and four red flags to watch for when selecting a training. Let’s talk about them!

Things To Look For

1. Clearly defined method or tradition

I am a big-time planner. Like so big, that going to office supply stores makes me ridiculously happy. So when it comes to planning 200 hours of content and scheduling, I’ve got it covered. By the end of 200 hours students will need to have the ability to create an entire class with knowledge of postures, muscular engagement, modifications, adjustments, hatha vinyasa sequencing, Sanskrit and more. This means that every day in training counts. Each of the seven weekends we are together will consist of several physical practices, review and lecture of every posture in the practice, guided activities for students to teach in small groups and deep dives into anatomy, spiritual texts, and ethics in yoga. 2. Comprehensive curriculum

One of the biggest things that makes a great teacher is practice. Teaching anything, but especially yoga, takes a knowledge of what you are asking students to do, a vocabulary that is clear in that direction, and a comfort in public speaking. Throughout the training, students will learn a skill through discussion and demonstration, and then have time to practice and experiment by teaching their fellow trainees. Over the course of seven weekends, we will be building our way through the natural arch of a yoga class and studying every posture and reason for that specific portion of class. Through repetition of practicing teaching, students will have a greater proficiency upon graduation. Topics that will aid in the overall knowledge of becoming a skillful teacher are asana, anatomy, sequencing, yoga philosophy, modifications, adjustments both hands-on and verbal, teaching practice, meditation and pranayama.

4 Red Flags To Avoid In YTT Programs

1. A cult of personality

I mean I’ve got a pretty amazing personality. Even my momma thinks so. However, I take my role as a teacher and trainer seriously. I am here to teach yoga and to help give you every ounce of knowledge I have, so you can go rock out some amazing yoga classes. Sure, we will have a good time, but this training is 100% about the yoga.

2. Promotional emphasis on an exotic locale

Well, we do live in California and there is nothing drab about that. While this training is held in a beautiful new studio, we are not sipping frozen drinks by the pool during sunset. This is a bring yourself, your mat, and surely some water kinda deal. The added bonus is that you get to head home and rest your tired muscles in your own bed every night.

3. Unlicensed psychotherapy

I am not a therapist, nor will I pretend to be. Yoga is a spiritual practice and in that way, our conversations will include topics like energy anatomy, boundaries, balance, truthfulness, attachment and power. But there will not be a scenario where you will be required to divulge past traumas or secrets, and then be counseled by me or anyone else.

4. Fundamentalism

One of my favorite things in this training is the offering and blend of various perspectives. My teachers come from different lineages which has truly helped in my ability to support students in my classes. Students will leave this training knowing several ways to approach sequencing, alignment, and building a class. The goal of this yoga training is not to provide one and only one way to do everything, but to educate students and give space for their own voice and critical thinking to come through.
